How to Start and Grow a New Wellness Business

Welcome to the world of wellness entrepreneurship! Starting a new wellness business is an exciting path filled with passion, purpose, and potential. Whether you're a health coach, nutritionist, or simply a wellness enthusiast with a desire to turn your passion into profit, this blog post is designed to help you navigate the essential steps to launch and grow your own successful business.

Let’s dive in.

Choose a Name: The first step in building your wellness brand is selecting the perfect name for your business. Your name should reflect your brand identity, resonate with your target audience, and be memorable. Brainstorm ideas that align with your vision and values, then conduct research to ensure your chosen name is available and not trademarked by another entity. Don’t spend too much time on this, in the end it’s truly more about the value you offer and what you deliver to clients than the *perfect* business name. Hint - if you can’t think of anything, use your name! For example: Laura Miller Wellness.

Get Legally Set Up: Once you've chosen a name, it's time to get your business legally established. Determine the appropriate legal structure for your venture, whether it's a sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or corporation. Register your business with the relevant authorities, obtain any necessary permits or licenses, and set up a business bank account to keep your personal and business finances separate (don’t skip this step). When I was first starting out in 2015, I kept my business finances mixed in with my personal bank account… learn from my mistakes and don’t do this.

Write a Business Plan: A well-crafted business plan serves as a roadmap for your wellness business, outlining your goals, target market, competitive analysis, marketing strategies, and financial projections. Take the time to thoroughly research and document each aspect of your business plan, as it will guide your decisions.

Activate Social Media: In today's modern world, a strong social media presence is essential for reaching and engaging with your target audience. Without overwhelming yourself, choose 1 platform you think your target audience will spend the most time on and regularly share valuable content that showcases your expertise and personality. Engage with your followers, respond to comments and messages promptly, and use hashtags to expand your reach.

Network Within Your Community: Building relationships within your local community can be incredibly valuable for growing your wellness business. Word of mouth is going to fasttrack your business growth, I guarantee it. Attend networking events, join industry associations, and collaborate with other health professionals to expand your network and reach new clients. Offer free workshops or seminars, volunteer at community events, and establish yourself as a trusted authority in your field.

Take Action, Even If It's Messy: Starting a new business can be intimidating, and it's natural to feel overwhelmed at times. Remember that perfection is not the goal—taking consistent action, even if it's imperfect, is what will ultimately lead to success. Embrace the learning process, be willing to adapt and pivot as needed, and don't be afraid to ask for help or seek guidance from mentors and peers. A business coach can be a great investment, especially when you’re first starting out. Take a look at my business coaching services here.
